Sublime
The power of the sublime was described by the 18c philosopher Edmund Burke when he differentiated beauty from the sublime. Some things that move us are beautiful, some are sublime but he believed the sublime moves us more profoundly than the beautiful. He believed beautiful things tended to be smaller, smoother and delicate, sublime ones vast, dark and threatening. A storm, cliff face, mountain, waterfall were sublime leaving us feeling overwhelmed and perhaps fearful, in awe of the enormity of the scene or event. The power of nature leaving a feeling of terror but also exhilaration.
As a photographer I steer clear of good weather searching out fog, mist, huge waves and angry skies, loving bleak winters and the extremes of nature. Inspired by artists like Turner, Blake and Rothko I aim to capture the essence of the sublime.
